From the first moment of contact with a “visitor” to the last conversation, ombuds employ various interviewing skills: establishing a rapport, active listening, question formation, reflection of underlying emotions, problem clarification and prioritization, summarization, and other related skills. Participants will learn how to be intentional and effective in establishing and conducting interviews and other conversations with visitors as well as other stakeholders involved in the case. This interactive presentation will include theory and strategies from the fields of psychology, counseling, family therapy and special emphasis in “motivational interviewing”.

Program includes lecture, case discussion, role-play and opportunities for peer feedback and discussion.

As ombudsmen we often get asked to facilitate groups with different ends in mind. This session will help participants use their natural ombudsman skills to support groups to either build strategy, work on team process or facilitate a negotiation betweens groups of people. Participants will work on group process skills of;
•  Gathering facts and information
•  Identifying issues
•  Setting agendas
•  Managing logistics
•  Facilitating group dynamics (participation, challenging behavior)
•  Generating options
•  Decision making
•  Agreements,closures and action items
•  Group memory system

The session will be highly interactive and learning will take place through demonstration, practice and feedback on group facilitation skills. Participants will have a chance to shape the agenda by giving input to instructor in a pre-session telephone call or survey.
