Examination Detailed Content

The content of the certification examination has been determined by the results of the organizational ombudsman job analysis survey, conducted between April and October, 2008. (For a complete report, click here.) A diverse group of 200 practitioners responded to the survey. They were given a list of almost 200 tasks or elements of the organizational ombudsman job, and asked to respond if they perform that task and if so, how important is it in their job practice. The final examination content includes only those elements identified in the job analysis survey that at least 90% of respondents said they did perform and that they agreed were moderately to very important tasks. The tasks or job elements were grouped into seven broad content categories or domains. Based on the survey responses, these domains were weighted in relative importance to determine what percentage of the examination content is devoted to each. For example, 20% of the examination covers the domain "conflict management" and includes tasks or elements such as "identify presented issues," "identify underlying issues," "facilitation," "shuttle diplomacy," and "coaching." The "Detailed Examination Content" outlines the domains, the list of job elements, and the percentage of the examination that will be devoted to each domain. The two-hour exam consists of 110 multiple-choice questions.
